Each Wild Hive is handcrafted with care, designed to mimic a natural tree cavity and provide an environment as close as possible to what wild bees would naturally inhabit. The goal is to create a space that remains largely unmanaged by humans, allowing the bees to establish themselves naturally.

Crafted from untreated timber, the hive is built into a sturdy hexagonal cylinder using screws and exterior wood glue. The thick walls (63mm) are intentionally roughened to encourage the bees to create a protective propolis envelope, which helps maintain the health and stability of the colony. Inside, six fixed top bars—each coated with a strip of beeswax—provide a secure foundation for comb attachment.
The Wild Hive serves as an open invitation to local scout bees during swarming season. To make it even more enticing, it has been primed with a blend of beeswax and propolis, a natural attractant that helps guide scout bees searching for a new home.. Ideally, it should be placed in a tree to closely resemble their natural habitat. However, if that’s not possible, positioning it on a sturdy shed or garage roof, or a top concrete blocks, works just as well. For added convenience and aesthetic appeal, you can also purchase The Wild Hive Stand, a beautifully designed companion that complements any setting while providing the perfect support for your hive.
Then, simply cross your fingers and wait for the bees to discover it! Alternatively, you can introduce a purchased colony directly into the hive.
I build each Wild Hive with the bees' best interests in mind. Every hive is treated using a traditional Japanese method of wood scorching, as seen in the photos, followed by several coats of linseed oil. This process helps protect the hive against all weathers, ensuring a durable and resilient home for the bees. However, if you prefer your hive to be completely untreated, just let me know.
A slotted lower entrance allows easy access for a smartphone, enabling you to capture photos or videos of the bees as they construct their beautiful new comb.
